Marquita Stables

Speech and Language Therapist

As a qualified teacher, I taught German and French in a Cornish secondary school for several years before retraining.  In 2015 I qualified as a speech and language therapist and worked for eight years with Cornwall’s NHS Speech and Language Therapy Service.  In 2023 I left the NHS to start working independently with Mid Cornwall Speech and Language.

As a speech and language therapist, I have supported children and teenagers with a wide variety of speech, language and communication needs including:

  • speech sound disorder including Childhood Apraxia of Speech
  • motor speech difficulties
  • developmental language disorder
  • language disorder associated with other conditions
  • autism
  • social communication
  • selective mutism
  • stammering
  • AAC [Augmentative and Alternative Communication]
  • learning disability
  • SEMH [Social, Emotional and Mental Health]
  • trauma and attachment

I have supported children and teenagers in mainstream and specialist settings, and in their own homes.

My experience includes assessing and treating children and teenagers:

  • who are bilingual
  • with complex needs
  • with profound and multiple learning disability
  • who are autistic and experiencing poor mental health and/or trauma.

As a dually qualified speech and language therapist / teacher, I am skilled at supporting young people not just at home, but also in their preschools and schools.  In partnership with parents and teachers, I aim to boost young people’s communication and enable participation and learning to their full potential.

I have a functional, practical approach to therapy and listen to young people and parents to establish their priorities.  I work with parents to co-produce a plan that develops their child’s communication skills in a way that is enjoyable, motivating and a good fit for the family routine.
